Diabetes is a metabolic disorder where the body is unable to regulate the hormone insulin, to utilize glucose. 1) Carbohydrate

Carbohydrates with low glycemic load provide a steady raise in the blood glucose levels and do not demand heavy need for insulin. Consuming a paleo diet provides more complex carbohydrates that have low glycemic load. It also strictly eliminates processed, refined foods, simple sugars, sugary drinks and beverages.

The amount of dietary fiber recommended is about 25- 35 grams per day. Dietary fiber contributes to the bulk or roughage to the diet and are classified as soluble and insoluble fibers.

Fruits and vegetables are the sources of soluble fibers; whole grains, seeds and nuts are the sources of insoluble fibers. Consuming soluble fiber helps to reduce the cholesterol and blood glucose levels, insoluble fibers promote healthy bowel movements.

Research has identified specific micronutrients for effective diabetes management such as chromium, vanadium, niacin, magnesium, vitamin E, and all B complex vitamins.

In a study conducted on Diabetic patients, it was found that Paleo diet had better glycemic index and reduced the risk of heart disease conditions when compared to a regular Diabetic diet. It was found that the paleo diet had lower glycemic index (GI 50%) when compared to a Diabetic diet (GI 55%).
